For Aby Warburg, "at the heart of variation, water admits a ferocious constancy. It flows without interruption and dissolves all that the landscape contains of solidity". In painting, it is first apprehended as a physical force, a form-diluting substance whose intensity becomes an essential element of an artist's facture. From Turner's famous watercolors to Francis Bacon's ethereal figures, the technique masterfully illustrates how water is used to reveal color and movement. In L'eau et les rêves, Gaston Bachelard describes water as an element both intimate and universal, capable of evoking feelings of fluidity and metamorphosis. It becomes a reflection of our imagination, where the depths of water reveal our psyche. It is in this fluidity that the work of art comes to separate the thing from its medium, the organic from the inorganic. The selected artists propose bodily forms that liquefy, mutate and shift, reflecting the eternal evolution of the human condition. Each work bears witness to this dynamic, where contours dissolve to transcend the boundaries between body and mind. In a watery, sometimes amniotic atmosphere, individuals no longer identify themselves, but move and spread out of the frame, becoming in turn symbols of incessant transformation.
